Because the Plexiglas flap is powered and slides in a track, the Power Pet door is windproof. That is a considerable advantage for windy areas since the absolute worst pet door performance comes from blowing open (even the best insulating window is no good when it's open!). This positive sealing is significantly more important than the fact that the insulation value is only one thickness of Lexan.

Power Pet doors feature a directional sensing system that operates a fully automatic, motor driven panel. The signal emitted from your pet’s collar tells the Power Pet door how far away your pet is and the direction in which your pet is traveling. This allows the Power Pet to open only when your pet is on a direct approach, not when it is just wandering by and not when it is sitting or sleeping next to the door.

The powered flap is advantageous for timid pets who may have difficulty with a flap they must push open.

Some folks want to keep one pet in and let the other out. In most cases, the power pet is going to be fine for this purpose. However, if two pets are chummy with each other: play together and so on, then there's a greater chance that they might both get out at the same time.

When closed, the flap is secured by an automatic acting steel dead bolt that prevents the flap from being opened from the outside. Only the signal from the collar key will activate the door. It is important to note that this feature validates the manufacturers claim that "unauthorized" animals, including raccoons, cannot break in.

Power choices:

•   110 volt AC Wall Outlet: Your standard POWER PET ^TM Door comes standard with a UL approved ac adapter. Plug the adapter into a nearby wall outlet for continuous operation.
   
•   AC with Battery Backup:  You may purchase an optional rechargeable battery for use along with your AC adaptor. If your household electricity should fail, the Power Pet Door will automatically switch over to battery operation. When power is restored, the AC adaptor will automatically recharge the battery.
   
•   Full Battery Operation:  You may operate the Power Pet Door with battery only if an AC outlet isn't handy. However, you will need to recharge the battery periodically (recharge interval varies with use). In this case, it will be convenient to have the optional battery charger kit and a spare battery.

Features:

•   Dual Range Controls - The activation distance outside may be adjusted differently from the distance inside. Generally, a shorter range is preferable for inside and a longer range for outside. Both sides are user-adjustable.
   
•  4-Way Access Control - Individual activation buttons for the inside and outside sensors give you the ability to set the door for in-only and out-only in addition to completely locked or completely open (obviously, the pet must always have the collar key on to come in).
   
•   Automatic Close Control - The Power Pet door has a 'smart' sensing circuit that keeps the panel open so long as it's receiving a signal from the collar key on the pet. Once the pet is completely through the opening, the panel closes. This allows for variability in the open time to accommodate the pets needs (especially important for multiple pets or infirm pets).
   
•   Automatic Safety Retract - The flap weighs less than 2lbs and closes by gravity (not the motor) so it cannot harm pets or children. In addition, there is an automatic safety retract feature that causes the flap to retract if it encounters an obstruction during closure.
   
•   Easy to Install - Installation requires cutting a hole the same dimension as the flap; not the entire unit.
   
•   Improved Design - This "PX" version is a complete re-design of a prior product line that is greatly improved both functionally and stylistically. The new design is less than 2" deep on the face of the door and is self-framing to a depth of 2" with decorative ABS composite trim frame for the outside.

The Power Pet Door is available in a patio pet panel for sliding glass doors.

We have had a few reports of difficulties at temperatures below 30F. At this point we'd have to suggest this door not be put into use at temperatures below freezing.
